Goodbye, Stormy

My dog Stormy passed away today. He was 17 years old.

We picked up Stormy (a Bichon Frise) in the winter of 1990 from a breeder in North Conway, NH. The family drove for four hours in a raging blizzard on the way to pick him up, and that's how he got his name.

Stormy was a good boy. He slept at the foot of my bed for years. When it was cold, he would actually crawl under the sheets and sleep at the foot of my bed like he was in a fort. He followed me around the house like ... well, a puppy dog. He was great at the "sit" command, but not so much at anything else. We never spent much time training him, but we played with him constantly and just loved having him around. He was a happy, fluffy, hypo-allergenic 13 lbs. of fun.

He enjoyed drinking coffee out of mugs if someone forgot to pick them off the table. He loved running back and forth between the kitchen and family room at our old house, slipping on the linoleum at break-neck speeds until he hit carpet ... at which point he would take off even faster as his paws gained traction. Then, a loop around the coffee table and right back out to the kitchen again. He had a bit of a queasy stomach his whole life, and as such could never handle long car rides without getting sick. He loved rawhides, but only to lick the chicken basting off and leave the bone behind.

As the years moved on and I left home, he became my mom's shadow. He followed her everywhere, and she took great care of him. And when my mom moved down to North Carolina, he became one of the few constant & familiar things in her life. After all those years of her taking care of him, he took care of her just by being there.

And he held on as long as he could. He lived an incredible 17 years. I wish he could have lived 17 more. He was a really, really good boy.
